The Summit Learning Center offers comprehensive consultation for home
programming. It is common that parents of children with autism
teach their children at home, hiring therapists to work with their child
or doing therapy themselves. Home programs involve a lot of hard work
and dedication to teaching the child necessary skills they will need to
lead a better quality of life.
A workshop is designed to train parents and their therapists in teaching
procedures that will be used in the child’s program. The consultant
will gather data on your child, observe your child in an instructional
setting, work individually with your child, set up goals for your child,
and train the child’s team to educate your child effectively.
Typically the first workshop will last 2 days (9am-5pm). During the first
workshop, your child’s educational team will be trained in Behavior
Analysis, Verbal Behavior, and teaching procedures. The team will then
practice using these procedures on each other and then with the child.
This will ensure that all team members have an understanding of what they
are teaching and how to teach effectively.
After the 1st workshop, it is recommended to continue workshops at least
once every 6 weeks. Follow-up workshops generally last 1 full day (9am-5pm)
and involve updating of your child’s program, learning new programs,
refining teaching procedures, and evaluating the child’s progress.
